  • VIZIO secures 3 spots in the top 5 Best Sellers including a popular big screen 42” model

IRVINE, CA – FEBRUARY 24, 2011 — VIZIO, Inc. America’s #1 HDTV Company, announced today that it outperformed the industry as the number one shipper of all flat panel HDTVs in Q4 2010 for both North America and the U.S. With an LCD HDTV share of more than 28%* VIZIO has captured the important essence of consumer desires in flat panel HDTV performance features, design form and value.

VIZIO saw significant sales increases with its 7-time award winning XVT Series lineup with VIZIO Internet Apps®, as well as in the Beyond TV category, headlined by Blu-ray players with wireless Internet apps and the nation’s bestselling Soundbars. VIZIO was also the leading shipper of LED backlit HDTVs in North America in Q4** behind the strength of its TruLED and Razor LED products shipping over 50% more backlit LED LCD TVs than its nearest competitor.

“VIZIO continues to defy conventional wisdom in the consumer electronics space with strong growth and innovation. Our team’s success has proven that consumers recognize great technology at a great price by unseating the industry’s traditional leaders in the LCD market,” stated Randy Waynick, Chief Sales Officer, of VIZIO. “Customers have embraced our higher performance product lineup and efficient retail partners in TVs and have now carried over their brand loyalty to our Beyond TV products, making VIZIO’s soundbars and Blu-ray players best sellers as well. Stay tuned in 2011 as we extend our “Entertainment Freedom for All” brand vision to Theater 3D HDTVs, tablets and smartphones.”

Adding to the meteoric growth of the brand, VIZIO’s Beyond TV Category, which includes soundbars, Blu-ray players, Headphones, Wall mounts, Cables, Wireless Routers, and other accessories, saw tremendous increases in Q4. Market-leading Soundbars saw sales growth of 200% Q/Q while sales of VIZIO’s popular Blu-ray players grew 163% representing 10% of the market***. Offering a wide range of Soundbar solutions with innovative wireless subwoofers in 5.1 and 2.1 channel configurations and sizes for small to large size televisions has allowed VIZIO to dominate this market — capturing 54% of the growing market in Q4 based on CEA’s MarketMetrics data.

VIZIO has also become a leader in some key advanced TV categories, rising to #1 in LED LCD TV unit shipments in North America and was #2 in high frame rate LCD and 40”+ screen size,” stated Paul Gagnon, Director of North American TV Research at DisplaySearch.

Vizio XVT553SV Review

16 02 2011

I can’t imagine that too many of your LCD aficionado friends will be too impressed when they see your brand spanking new Vizio XVT553SV sitting in your living room while the set is turned off.  But, wait until you see the change of heart after you turn this budget friendly television on.

Strengths:
  • Decent blacks
  • Good shadow detail
  • Price
  • Accurate colors
  • Good image uniformity
  • Great array of streaming and integrated apps
  • Bluetooth remote with QWERTY keyboard
  • Integrated WiFi
Weaknesses:
  • Bluing in shaded areas
  • Bad off angle viewing
  • Plain Jane styling
  • Fewer picture controls than competition

The picture quality produced by this relatively inexpensive LCD was pretty impressive.  The deep blacks provided a great contrast for the accurate and well saturated colors and, though I did notice some random blooming across the screen, the overall image was uniform across the screen, unless you were sitting way off center.
As you’ve probably come to expect, I always start my reviews with the Movie (or equivalent) preset, which was remarkably accurate in terms of grayscale though a little brighter than I would have liked to have seen for dark room viewing.  But, that was easily adjusted using the light output adjustment feature.  I was a little less than impressed by the number of advanced picture controls on this television, though I really didn’t seem to need them in order to bring the picture into line.
Black level: This Vizio model comes with local dimming.  This means that the television will automatically adjust the backlighting in accordance with the image being displayed on the screen.  This really enhanced the blacks on this TV.  As a matter of fact, it made such a difference that I felt as though it outperformed several of the more expensive models I’d reviewed previously.

The other big plus with the VIzio XVT553SV was the integrity of the shadow details that were available.  Details in darker movies like “The Dark Knight” and “Star Wars” often get lost in the background, but not with this TV.
Now, for the bad stuff.  I was a little disturbed by the stray illumination or blooming I found here.  It really only happened when you watch really scenes that require really bright objects to be displayed against really dark backgrounds, like during the credits or space scenes.  I didn’t notice this happening too much in darker scenes without bright objects or during brighter scenes.

I was impressed by the level of discernable detail available in the shadowy areas.  The details were not obscured much at all, which was a welcome surprise.
Color accuracy: The colors on this television are bright, accurate and robust, just like they ought to be.  Skin tones appeared natural and even, not pale and lifeless as they do on several of the competitors’ models.  The greens, blues, and reds were lush without appearing fake or gaudy.

Of course, this television did succumb to the typical bluing in darker, shadowy areas, but this particular artifact, while irritating, was not as noticeable here as it is on many other sets.

The typical blue tinge was obvious in the shadowy areas.  In fact, it was a bit more obvious than I had expected or had hoped.

Uniformity: In terms of image uniformity, this television kept overly bright spots to a minimum.  As a matter of fact, not only did this television outperform most of the LCD competition in this arena, it actually performed on par with many plasma, which excel in this particular category.

But moving even just a few inches from center really made a huge difference in terms of what you saw on the screen.  The blooming, which was minimal from head on, was significantly exaggerated the farther you move from center.  The colors remained accurate, but the impact from the deep blacks fell off significantly as well.
Bright lighting: Leave it to Vizio to remember to add a matte screen to reduce glare and reflection under bright lights.  Not only did I find that it was easier to view programming under brightly lit conditions, but the blacks were better preserved as well.
Standard-definition: If you’re like me, you still have a bunch of DVDs laying around.  Watching them can be somewhat painful on other LCD sets, but not this one.  The Vizio XVT553SV offered full resolution DVD viewing, and although the details appeared a bit softer than I had hoped, the overall experience was positive.

Audio Rating: 3/10

It’s a good thing that this television is relatively inexpensive since you will probably want to go ahead and throw a set of external speakers in the buggy as well.  But, although the internal speaker system leaves a lot to be desired with this television, I wouldn’t consider it a deal breaker as most flat panel televisions have pretty bad internal speaker systems.

Features Rating: 9/10

Vizio finally ditched the two tone look and bulky speaker bar in favor of the sleek black glossy chassis, which is definitely a step up, but nothing that the competition hasn’t already done.  Needless to say, the Vizio looks much better on than off.

The remote, on the other hand, is impressive.  Not only does this remote have every key you could ever want on a state of the art clicker, but it also has a slide out QWERTY keyboard, making Internet surfing a breeze.  The Bluetooth connectivity means that you don’t have to contort yourself to be in the line of sight in order for it to work and it just feels substantial in your hand.  Best of all, this remote comes with the TV completely free of charge.

Built in Wi-Fi in probably one of the most notable add ons for this television.  You can surf the Web without ever getting up.  And who can’t appreciate viewing YouTube on a 55” screen?  You can access NetFlix, YouTube, Facebook and any other website you wish without ever adding another piece of equipment, which is truly cost effective as well as aesthetically pleasing.

In addition to providing built in Wi-Fi, Vizio also built in Netflix, Vudu, Rhapsody, and Amazon VOD for plenty of audio and video streaming options.  You also have access to plenty of widgets designed to get you the info you need in a snap.

Value Rating: 8/10

At just under $2200, this television offers a great picture, built in Wi-Fi, widgets and other apps for a fraction of the price of its competitors.  As a matter of fact, I was so impressed by this television that it will be going on my wish list for this year’s Christmas gift.  While the Vizio XVT553SV isn’t perfect, the drawbacks are minimal and are definitely not deal breakers in my opinion.

Overall Rating: 7.8/10

Overall, I truly enjoyed every minute of testing this television.  And, while I loved the picture quality, I loved the price tag even more.  For consumers looking to break into the mid level LCD market, this is definitely a winner.

Vizio Extends Battle Plan Company to Unveil Tablet, Cellphone With Same Strategy as Its Low-Cost TVs

5 01 2011

By YUKARI IWATANI KANE

Vizio Inc., which put inexpensive flat-panel TVs in living rooms, now is setting its sights on cellphones and tablet computers.

Vizio Inc., which put inexpensive flat-panel TVs in living rooms, now is setting its sights on cellphones and tablet computers with a new tablet and cellphone. Yukari Kane discusses.

Vizio, which has vied with Samsung Electronics Co. for leadership in U.S. sales of television sets, plans Monday in advance of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to discuss its new mobile products. The company so far has been known for LCD TV sets, Blu-ray disc players and related accessories, and success with its new devices could put pressure on its rivals’ earnings.

[VIZIO_3] VizioVia Phone

VizioVizio’s Via Tablet, above, and Via Phone, below, will have the same look and feel as the company’s TV sets.

VIZIO_4

VIZIO_4

The Irvine, Calif., company said its first mobile phone, to be called Via Phone, will have a 4-inch screen, a front-facing camera for video calls, a rear-facing five megapixel camera and the capability to shoot video. The larger mobile device, the Via Tablet, will have an 8-inch, high-resolution screen; WiFi wireless connectivity; three speakers; and a front-facing camera for video conferencing. Both items will be introduced this summer and run Google Inc.’s Android operating system, providing access to the application store associated with the popular operating system, Vizio said.

Crowded Market

Matthew McRae, Vizio’s chief technology officer, declined to provide prices until closer to the products’ arrival. But he said the company’s strategy again will be to make affordable products with innovative features. Vizio has thought about how it could “provide the best that’s out there to your typical Wal-Mart shopper,” he said. “Everybody deserves the latest technology.”

The closely held company, which also plans to announce a lineup of 3-D TV sets this week starting at less than $300, has been a major factor in driving down prices for flat-screen TV sets. Vizio reported $2.5 billion in revenue for 2009, up from $142 million posted in 2005. The company declined to comment on its profitability.

New entrants aren’t new to the competitive cellphone market. And some big-name companies, including Microsoft Corp. and Google, have struggled with cellphones bearing their brands. Vizio said it has a carrier lined up for its cellphone but declined to disclose who it is until closer to launch. And the company’s tablet could be at a disadvantage because it only offers Wi-Fi, not cellular, connectivity.

Meanwhile, the market for tablets of the sort pioneered by Apple Inc. with iPad is just getting started. Tablet sales are expected to more than triple to nearly 61 million units this year from just 18 million units last year, according to industry tracker iSuppli. Though many companies have announced plans to introduce such devices, Vizio’s entry could accelerate price cutting that would squeeze profit margins.

Vizio’s plans are “going to cause some Excedrin popping,” said Richard Doherty, an analyst for technology consulting firm Envisioneering Group. “They’re going to be a real disrupter.” He said Vizio will be able to take advantage of its strong retail relationships and existing base of Vizio TV-set owners.

A Race With Samsung

Vizio, which was founded in 2002, has only 300 employees but a few years ago vaulted to the top in North American shipments of LCD television sets. Samsung pushed ahead of Vizio in the first half of last year, but Vizio regained the No. 1 spot in the third quarter, with 19.9% of shipments to Samsung’s 17.7%, according to iSuppli. Samsung remained ahead in shipments of all types of flat-panel sets, according to iSuppli.

Vizio said its small size, keeps the company nimble and its costs down. In Vizio’s typical style, the new phone and tablet were developed over the past year and a-half by a team of fewer than 10 people. Mr. McRae said it hired mobile specialists from Nokia Corp. and other device manufacturers to gain the necessary expertise.

[VIZIO]

A key part of Vizio’s strategy is to make it easy for customers to access Internet services across all of its products. The interface on the tablet and phone will have the same look and feel that the company uses on its TV sets. The new products will have ports for HDMI connections, too, so the tablet and phone can be hooked up to TV sets to display high-definition video on the bigger screen. The phone and tablet will be usable as remote controls for other consumer-electronics devices, including all Vizio products. “We’ve specifically focused on making it a great multimedia experience,” said Mr. McRae.

The devices also will provide access to Vizio’s Via Plus Internet service, which lets users access apps such as Netflix Inc.’s movie downloading service, the Android Market and the Facebook and Twitter social-networking sites.

At the Consumer Electronics Show, which kicks off Wednesday night, Vizio also plans to discuss a new video-downloading service that it calls Vizio on Demand. The services will let users start watching a movie on one device and finish watching it on another.

VIZIO Announces Full Line Up of New LED LCD HDTVs Including Theater 3D™ and Cinema HDTV™ Ultra-Widescreen Models

5 01 2011

Irvine, CA—January 4, 2011 — VIZIO, America’s #1 LCD HDTV Company*, announces over 40 new LED LCD HDTVs, from a convenient 16-inch class size to a larger-than-life 71-inch class size and two new Cinema HDTV™ LED lit models that supports 21:9 Cinema aspect ratio with Theater 3D and VIZIO Internet Apps™. The new models span across all three of VIZIO’s HDTV product lines, from the essential E series, to the sleek design of the M series, and to the award winning, high performance XVT series.

Already the North American leader in LED LCD HDTVs, showing 30% YoY growth from 2009-2010*, the variety of these new models will further demonstrate VIZIO’s role as the leader in LED LCD HDTVs.

“LED’s will account for about 21% of LCD TV shipments in North America for 2010, but jump dramatically to more than half of all LCD TV shipments in 2011** as the premium for them falls and a new range of more affordable edge-lit LED solutions are brought to the market,” stated Paul Gagnon, Director of North American TV Research at DisplaySearch.

VIZIO’s Leading LED LCD Picture Quality
All E and M series LED LCD models utilize VIZIO’s Edge-Lit Razor LED™ backlighting technology. Razor LED™ puts rows of LEDs along the edges of the screen, allowing for incredibly thin designs, and offering greener performance than other conventional LCD TVs. Many models also feature Smart Dimming, which intelligently controls the array of LEDs, organized in up to 32 zones. Working frame by frame, based on the content being displayed, Smart Dimming adjusts brightness in precise steps down to deep black level (where the LED is completely off in many models). This cutting-edge technology minimizes light leakage and can enable a Dynamic Contrast Ratio of up to 10 Million to 1, for blacker blacks and whiter whites.

Most of the top of the line XVT Series LED LCD models have VIZIO’s Full Array TruLED™ backlighting with Smart Dimming technology. With over 120 zones, TruLED backlighting is able to dim specific areas of the image, depending on what’s on screen, resulting in the most incredible and life-like images that “pop” off the screen.

In addition, LEDs are more energy efficient than other commercially available TV technologies, generally requiring less power to run. They also don’t contain mercury, a toxin commonly found in conventional TVs.

“VIZIO’s leadership in LED will continue with the introduction of over 40 models for 2011,” stated Matthew McRae, VIZIO CTO. “The picture performance and environmental benefits are available in sizes ranging from the petite 16 inch class to the larger-than-life 71-inch class, ensuring there is an LED lit model that suits every need.”

Theater 3D – Superior 3D For All
Available on select models in the E and M series, and on the entire XVT series, VIZIO Theater 3D™ offers consumers a revolutionary new technology that renders flicker-free and brighter images than conventional 3D technologies currently in the market. By utilizing a circular polarized filter, the burden of 3D processing is built into the TV, allowing Theater 3D™ eyewear to be free of the batteries and shutter mechanisms inherent in Active Shutter 3D TVs.

Theater 3D™ offers several performance advantages over conventional, “active” 3D systems. Theater 3D™ is up to 2X brighter, significantly reduces crosstalk compared to current Active Shutter LCD TVs, handles fast motion without blurring, has a wider horizontal viewing angle, and has none of the annoying Active Shutter 3D flicker that may cause eye strain. In addition, Theater 3D™ eyewear can be used to view 3D movies in a majority of movie theaters.

Depending on the model up to four pairs of the lightweight and comfortable Theater 3D™ glasses are included with each TV. With this, VIZIO has eliminated two of the most common objections to 3D HDTV purchases: the need to wear bulky 3D glasses that require batteries or recharging and the need to invest in expensive additional 3D glasses so the entire family can enjoy it together. Half of the included glasses are specially designed to accommodate prescription eyeglass wearers. By incorporating all of the 3D processing into the TV instead of burdening the eyewear, as is the case with Active Shutter 3D technology, VIZIO Theater 3D enables users to wear comfortable, eco-friendly, battery-free eyewear instead of Active Shutter glasses that are heavy, awkward, and require recharging and other maintenance.

Each Theater 3D™ model supports a wide selection of 3D formats to ensure compatibility across Blu-ray, broadcast, cable, satellite, and gaming.  This includes Frame Packing, Side-by-Side, Top and Bottom, plus SENSIO® HiFi 3D and the RealD Format.

VIZIO Internet Apps™ (VIA) – Entertainment On Demand
Available on most VIZIO LED LCD HDTVs, VIZIO Internet Apps™ (VIA) offers content through the Internet from top brands including: Amazon Video On Demand, Facebook®, Flickr®, Netflix, Rhapsody®, Pandora®, Twitter™, VUDU®, and Yahoo!® TV Widgets, as well as several new apps recently released, including: Fandango®, iMemories®,  MediaBox™, My-Cast®, TuneIn Radio™, Web Videos, Wiki TV and Yahoo Fantasy Football .

VIZIO Internet Apps™ (VIA) delivers unprecedented choice and control of web-based content directly to the television without the need for a PC or set-top box.

Many models come with IR or Bluetooth remote controls with QWERTY keyboards, making navigation incredibly simple and intuitive. State of the art wireless Internet access is available through built-in single or Dual-Band 802.11n Wi-Fi, allowing viewers to enjoy the convenience of on-demand movies, TV shows, social networking, music, photos and more with just the push of a button.

VIZIO Internet Apps™ (VIA) Plus HDTVs
The XVT3D476SP and XVT3D556SP are part of the new VIZIO VIA Plus ecosystem that combines the convenience of entertainment on demand with a consistent and seamless experience across all devices in the ecosystem, including the VIZIO Phone and VIZIO Tablet.  VIZIO Internet Apps™ (VIA) Plus TVs, which will incorporate the Google TV platform, feature a sophisticated and intuitive user interface that allows users to access their favorite apps as well as search and browse the web using a premium Bluetooth QWERTY universal remote with touchpad and built-in dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi.

Cinema HDTV – Ultra-Widescreen
Two models in the XVT Series are part of the new Cinema HDTV™ line. These 21:9 aspect ratio models can display 2.35:1 (“CinemaScope”) movies without any black bars for a true cinematic experience. Most HDTVs have an aspect ratio of 16:9, or 1.78:1, and a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 often referred to as 1080p Full HD. This aspect ratio was a compromise between the more square formatting of older televisions (4:3 or 1.33:1) and the wider 1.85:1 aspect of many movies. A 1.85:1 movie on a 16:9 HDTV will still show some black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. Big-budget Hollywood blockbusters, though, are usually filmed in the much wider 2.35:1 or 2.39:1 aspect ratio. VIZIO’s new Cinema HDTVs slot in between these “CinemaScope” aspect ratios perfectly with a 2.37:1 (21:9) aspect ratio. So whether you’re watching 2001, Lord of the Rings, Kill Bill, Toy Story 3, or countless other movies, you can watch them in their original aspect ratio and without black bars.

Each Cinema HDTV™ model also features VIZIO Internet Apps™ in Cinema mode, which allows users to simultaneously browse Apps while watching 16:9 Full HD content without compromise in resolution or change in size.

Cinema HDTV models will be available in 50- and 58- inch class sizes. VIZIO will also be demonstrating a 71-inch class model at their private CES showcase at the Wynn Hotel.

Advanced Audio
To ensure the audio experience is every bit as good as the video, all the new LED lit models feature audio technologies from SRS Labs. E series models feature SRS TruSurround HD™, which creates an immersive, feature-rich surround sound experience from just two speakers, complete with rich bass, high frequency detail and clearer dialog. Also available on most models is SRS TruVolume™ – a revolutionary solution that provides a consistent and comfortable volume level while watching TV programming for a more enjoyable multimedia experience.

Most M and all Theater 3D and XVT models feature SRS StudioSound HD – the ultimate all-in-one audio suite designed specifically for Flat Panel TVs. Years of excellence in audio, practical experience and patented technologies allow StudioSound HD to deliver the most immersive and natural surround sound ever using built-in TV speakers. The suite also delivers remarkably crisp and clear dialog, rich bass, an elevated sound stage and consistent, spike-free volume levels. StudioSound HD features optimized audio presets for movies, news, sports and music while also providing a built-in EQ toolset for peak audio performance.

VIZIO continues to embrace its leadership in the LED LCD TV marketplace, not only being the #1 brand in sales, but also the brand in features, technologies and performance.  The new LED lit models will become available starting this spring.
